The 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup, that took place in China this past August and September, saw seven teams directly qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics. Those teams were: Argentina, Australia, Spain, France, Iran, Nigeria, and USA. Japan qualified automatically as the hosts of the Olympics.
The tournament will consist of six teams, divided into two groups of three games each. Each team will play all the other teams in their group (two games for each team). The top two teams in both groups will advance to the semi-finals. The winners of each semi-final will advance to the final for a chance to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
In addition to Victoria, Split (Croatia), Kaunas (Lithuania) and Belgrade (Serbia) have been announced as the host cities for the four qualifying tournaments.
The four FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments will include the 16 best-placed non-qualified teams from the FIBA Basketball World Cup and two highest-ranked countries per region in the FIBA World Ranking, presented by NIKE.
Canada is currently ranked 21st worldwide in the FIBA World Ranking presented by NIKE and is looking to return to the Olympics for the first time since 2000.
